张衡在天文学的发展史上贡献卓著,他曾两度担任掌管天文工作的太史令达14年。公元117年，张衡发明创造了浑天仪，它是世界上第一台用水力推动的大型观察星象的天文仪器。他写出了世界史中不朽的天文学名著《灵宪》和《浑天仪图注》，全面阐述了天地的生成和结构，科学解释了日、月、星、辰的本质和运动。

Zhang Heng contributed greatly in the development history of astronomy. He had held a post of Tai Shi Ling (an officer) in charge of the astronomy twice for fourteen years. Zhang Heng invented the celestial globe in 117AD. It’s the first astronomy instrument of observing stars through water power in the world. He wrote the immortal masterpiece in the world astronomy history “Ling Xian” and “Notes of the celestial globe picture”illustrating in an all-around way the bearing and structure of the earth and the sky, explaining scientifically the nature and movement of the sun, the moon and the stars.
